Dear all

Welcome to the arts4schools May newsletter

arts4schools' 5 minute survey

We are currently reviewing the information and resources we provide for teachers and looking for funding to help us grow. As part of that process we are seeking feedback from current teachers to ensure that future developments are tailored to your interests and needs. If you're a teacher and you can spare us five minutes please go to the online survey. The deadline is Monday 5th May.

Many thanks to those of you who have already taken part. We will summarise feedback in the next newsletter.

theatre-rites: Shopworks
A theatrical experience for people over 6
London: 1 - 22 May 2003
Co-commissioned by LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) and Wiener Festwochen (The Vienna Festival)

Theatre-rites is internationally renowned for its extraordinary fusion of performance, installation art, puppetry and sound. Since 1995 this UK company has been stirring the imaginative lives of adults and children in places as diverse as a derelict house, an old tidal mill and a dusty cellar. The company tours all over the UK and international appearances include Japan, Norway and Canada. Theatre-rites' shows are highly visual with very little use of language and will easily be understood by all. For more information go to the LIFT website.

Chicken Shed Theatre Company
Chicken Shed is the UK's largest professional theatre company to work inclusively. Its unique approach inspires and educates across the boundaries that separate individuals and communities. "We want to claim the performing arts for everyone," says Mary Ward, artistic director of the Company. "Any young person who wants to perform has the ability and the right to do so." Productions are based on inclusiveness, and encourage participation by all. "We may never see talent in some people because they never get the chance to show it," says Ward. "The only time they are allowed to come alive and realise their full potential is here. What they have to offer society, the inspiration and creativity that shines undisguised and unhampered on this, their only real stage, is a privilege to witness and to celebrate." An original musical, Alice in the Underground, previews at the theatre in May, followed by Caucasian Chalk Circle in July.

For those interested in free training in inclusive performing arts, there are opportunities available on the London-based Company's national programme. A 2 year BTEC Diploma in Performance, an MA and a one week summer school are also offered.

'Life Lines' at Oval House Theatre
Teenagers for whom school was not working have been finding new answers through a unique educational drama programme at the Oval House Theatre.

The Life Lines video grew out of the Back on Track life skills course, already a well-established part of Oval House Arts in Education work. Oval House Theatre and educational professionals soon realised there was a need to bring greater focus and attention to young people who were not currently fulfilling their potential or were at risk of being excluded.

Karlos Coleman (Back on Track Co-ordinator) led the process using drama, creative writing and improvisation focussing on issues expressed by the young people as real concerns in their own lives. The work culminated in this new, unique video; a testament to the lives and work of the young people themselves. A must for all those who have an interest in fostering creative, personal and social skills in young people.

Come to the launch, see the video, talk to the participants, and find out how this work has benefited Teachers, Youth Provision and Educational Professionals, and over 120 young people from 6 different local schools. The Life Lines video is for sale for £25 each. Launch date Thursday 26th June 2003 at Oval House Theatre Café, 4-6pm, 52-54 Kennington Oval, London SE11 5SW.
